The premise

The refinement loop is a three-pass method for editing AI drafts: structure first, substance second, style last. Each pass gives the model one specific kind of correction instead of "make it better", which is the feedback equivalent of the empty prompts you fixed in Lesson 1.

What is the refinement loop?

A good brief gets you a usable first draft, not a finished one. The gap between usable and shippable is closed by refinement, and most marketers close it badly: they reply “make it punchier” or “improve this” and watch the model rewrite random parts, often breaking what already worked.

The refinement loop replaces that spiral with three ordered passes, each with its own job:

The three passes of the refinement loop: focus and example correction for each pass.
PassFocusExample correction
1. StructureRight pieces in the right order"Move the call to action to the end. Cut the second paragraph entirely."
2. SubstanceClaims, specifics, and proof"Replace the generic benefit with the customer interview finding about report time."
3. StyleVoice, rhythm, word choice"Apply the Voice Spec Block. The first sentence is 28 words, get it under 20."

Order matters. Polishing sentences in a paragraph you will later delete is wasted work, which is exactly what happens when style feedback comes first.

Frequently asked questions

01How do I get AI to improve a draft?
Give one specific kind of correction per message, in order: structure first (move, cut, add), substance second (replace generic claims with real specifics), style last (apply your voice rules). Specific corrections work; "make it better" makes the model rewrite randomly.
02Why does AI make my draft worse when I ask it to improve?
Vague feedback gives the model no signal about what is wrong, so it rewrites broadly and often breaks the parts that worked. Name the exact change you want and limit each message to one type of correction.
03How many revision rounds should an AI draft take?
Three focused passes usually finish a draft: structure, substance, style. If the structure is still wrong after two attempts, the brief was the problem, so rewrite the brief and regenerate instead of continuing to edit.
