We tracked 60 marketers across three orgs for ten weeks. The cohort that got promoted, transferred onto strategic projects, or got a raise had one thing in common: a calendared, defended deep-work block of at least 90 minutes, four days a week.
The doing has been compressed. A campaign brief that used to take six hours now takes ninety minutes. The leverage of those saved hours, however, only shows up if they're spent on synthesis, not on more meetings.
The block has rules. No Slack. No agent calls. No model in the loop. A notebook, the open browser tab of one competitor, and a single question to answer by the end of the block. Output: one paragraph, written by hand.
The paragraph isn't the deliverable. The thinking is. But the paragraph is how you prove to your manager, and to yourself, that the thinking happened.
